Bariatric Surgery Testimonials

Dr. Erik Wilson performed my lap-band surgery several years ago. Dr. Wilson and his staff are amazing. They genuinely care for their patients. Dr. Wilson's Nurse Practitioner, Connie, is also amazing.

After trying every type of diet out there to lose weight, I found Dr. Erik Wilson. Now I am able to enjoy clothes shopping and looking in the mirror at the new and improved me. I am a revision patient, and this time around I found the process much easier than before. Thank you, Dr. Wilson, for giving me another chance at life.

Having struggled with my weight almost my whole life, and being on every diet out there, I had resigned myself that I would be heavy the rest of my life. I had a friend tell me of a surgery that her husband had, and he had lost almost 80 lbs. I researched the procedure, which was the gastric sleeve. Having some previous knowledge of other UT physicians, I went to their seminar on June 1, 2013. That seminar changed my life. I went through the process of the visits, pre-work, and testing. Everyone I spoke to made sure all my questions and concerns were answered.

Dr. Mehta was not only my doctor, but my cheerleader. He was always encouraging and told me how well I had done every step of the way. At my heaviest, I weighed 247 lbs. Nearly one year later, I weigh 173, and I'm still losing. I was in a size 18 or 20, and now I wear a size 8 or 10. It is not really about the size, but how I feel. I exercise almost every day and am able to do everyday things with so much more energy. Simple things, like tying my shoes and gardening, are so easy now. It is a pleasure to travel and be able to tighten the seat belt, instead of struggling just to get it buckled. I was on high-blood-pressure medicine, which I no longer take. I take only my vitamins, every day. What I like about the UT Health program is that it is laid out for you, and if you follow it, you will be successful. I could not be happier, and I only wish I had done this sooner!

Thank you to everyone at UT MIST!

I'm a bariatric bypass patient, and my life and health has been a roller coaster since 2012. I was diagnosed with diabetes and acid reflux, weighing 230 pounds. As you can imagine, I was devastated; I had heard several conversations on what happens to diabetic patients and how they have a very complicated lifestyle, something I wasn't planning to accept and live with.

After trying several different diet methods and seeing all fail, I eventually started to give up, until one Saturday morning. As I was preparing breakfast for my children, a bariatric commercial came on TV, and they of course posted the before and after pictures on how well the surgery came out. What took the cake was how they talked about being healthy and happy again, something I had completely lost a while back. That was the moment I decided to take the first big step to a healthier life: I picked up the phone and called to set an appointment.

My family stood by my side the whole time, knowing that this surgery would help me get back on track with my health. On December 17, 2013, I had my surgery. Dr. Erik Wilson came into my room where I was being prepared to go into the operating room. He assured my husband and I that I "was in good hands, and all was going to be well." He was right. I have lost 65 pounds in 11 months. This was the best decision I have had to make for a better me."

I have struggled with my weight for over 8 years. In 2012, at my highest weight, I was 410 pounds. It was then that I decided take back control of my life. My health was poor, I had no energy, and I suffered from high blood pressure and shortness of breath with excessive movement or exercise. I had my gastric sleeve done in March 2014. At that time, my weight was 336 pounds, and 8 months later I had lost 168 pounds, and I now weigh 168 pounds.

I now have energy to run and I can run 1.5 miles nonstop without feeling uncomfortable or short of breath. I am training for my career goal of firefighter/EMTP. I have my life back.

Thanks to Dr. Todd Wilson for my gastric sleeve!!!

Since losing the weight, we have both been checking items off our bucket lists. Lauren took boxing lessons. It’s a great workout! Charles finally got to go skydiving! He has wanted to skydive since he was 30, but was too heavy. He's already jumped twice and is planning a third jump (with Lauren – eek!).

In June 2014, we celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary in beautiful Asheville, North Carolina. We picked Asheville because it has the top-rated zip line in the country. We spent an entire day hiking and zip lining through the Blue Ridge Mountains. We spent another day whitewater rafting the French Broad River. It was an amazing vacation, and we can’t wait to have more adventures.

Our only regret about the surgery is that we didn't do it sooner. Dr. Wilson and his staff are excellent. The care we received is top-notch. Dr. Wilson and his staff truly care about their patients. We are living proof that the surgery works, and works well.
